Short CV:

Georgios Mergos is a Professor in the Division of Development and International Economics, Department of Economics, University of Athens. He studied Economics at the University of Athens. He has his M.Sc. from Oxford University, UK and his Ph.D. from Stanford University, USA in Applied Economics.

He worked as a Researcher-Economist with the World Bank (1983-1986) in the South Asia Projects Department doing research on the distributional impact of World Bank financed development projects in India. Then he joined the Department of Economics of the University of Athens in 1986 as a lecturer, promoted to Assistant Professor in 1989 and became full Professor in 1997.

He has an extensive research and publication record. He is author or co-author of a large number of articles in international scientific journals, such as:  The Journal of Productivity Analysis, Economic Letters, Food Policy, Energy Economics, Economics of Planning, journal of Agricultural Economics, European Review of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Economics, Journal of Forecasting, Applied Economics, Pakistan Development Review, Water Resources Management, European Water, Option Mediterranneenes, etc. He is also author or co-author of several books published by Greek and international publishers (including a book titled “Theoretical Analysis and Measurement of Productivity” Papazissis Publishers, Athens, 1997), of articles in collected volumes published internationally and in Greece. He is also author of a two volume book (2003) titled “Economic and Social Evaluation of Public Investment and Policy: Theory and Applications” used as the textbook in almost all Economic Departments in Greece. His research work has over 500 citations.

In addition to his academic work, his career has spanned work in the public and private sectors. In the public sector he has top management experience having served as Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance (2012-2013), Secretary General of the Ministry of Economy & Finance (2004-2007) and Governor of the Foundation of Social Security (IKA), the largest Social Security Organization in Greece (2007-2009). He has also served as Chairman of the Management Board of the Pension Reserve Fund of the Council of Europe (5/2009-5/2012).  

Further, he has done research with the Center of Planning and Economic Research (KEPE) (1986-1989) and has consulted with the Foundation of Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE) as Director of Sectoral Research  (1990-1996). In addition, he has consulted with various international organizations and the European Commission (DG External Relations) as a Team Leader & Expert of international missions on development assistance in many developing countries (China, India, other South Asia countries) and transition countries  (all countries of former Eastern Europe and several countries of the former Soviet Union) (1986-2000).

 In the private sector, he has served as Board member of listed companies, such as the Public Power Corporation (2005-2009), National Bank of Greece (2007-2009), Alpha Bank (2009-2010), GEK TERNA (2010-2012) and EPILEKTOS (2009-2012).
