This course provides an introductory grounding to the theory and practice of banking. The main objective of this course is to provide students with a good understanding of the role of banks and other financial institutions in the financial system, the rationale for their regulation, the ways in which they are regulated, the different types of risks they face and the ways to manage them.Topics covered will include: banks and financial intermediation, bank activities and services, types of banking, central banking and bank regulation, bank failures and banking crises, banks’ balance sheet and income structure, bank financial management, banking risks, and bank risk management.
