E. ATHENS BANKING LABORATORY (ABL)

Site: http://www.abl.econ.uoa.gr/en/

Director: Professor Dimitrios Vasiliou

The Athens Banking Laboratory (ABL) of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was established in 2017 with the Rector’s Act No. 466/22.11.2017 (FEK 4189/30.11.2017). It is a leading research center in Europe, conducting research and advisory work in the areas of business and bank administration, accounting, finance, investment and financial technology (FinTech).

The main goal of the ABL is to produce cutting-edge research output, and to solve business and banking challenges through scientific excellence. Other goals are:

  • Advance the state-of-the art in business and finance research, tackling issues from a perspective of creativity, technology advances, innovation and change.
  • Maintain a corporate development and new technology diffusion arsenal, enabling companies operating in the new highly competitive environment to exploit a unique reservoir of expertise in business and bank management.
  • Promote the interaction of Economics Department faculty of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, researchers and students with world-renowned institutions, scholars and professionals, thus ensuring research excellence and knowledge dissemination.
  • Support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research of the Economics Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens by infusing its research results, methodologies and tools into the classroom.
  • Advance and promote the Development Banking research aimed at the targeted and coordinated employment of domestic and international investment funds and financial instruments to fund investment projects, with multiplier socio-economic benefits, that can contribute effectively to the economic and social development of the country.
  • Emphasize Development Banking in its broadest sense and not just as a tool of development. Development Banking can be considered as a type of financial intermediation to help the country achieve a higher and sustainable level of growth. In a broader context, this desirable level of development includes the whole spectrum of socio-economic progress. In addition, Development Banking can be defined as a form of financial intermediation that provides funding for high priority investment projects in an economy. Both definitions suggest that the purpose of Development Banking is to bring the country to a higher level of growth.

The ABL is closely linked to a number of academic programs at the Economics Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and other educational institutions. At the undergraduate level, ABL supports the educational mission of the Economics Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. H. LABOLATORY OF POLITICAL SCIENCE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Director – Andreas Papandreou, Professor

The academic field of Sustainable Development is by its nature multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary. Economics has always been at the core of the idea of sustainable development. Despite the substantial academic and research activity on the many aspects of sustainable development there are few research centers devoted to the political economy dimension of sustainable development. The political economy of sustainable development focuses, inter alia, on how institutions, the political environment and the economy interact and influence each other and thus form the underlying conditions that allow or prevent sustainable development. The importance of the political economy dimension is apparent when considering the failings of the global community to take adequate climate action in view of the unprecedented scientific consensus for its need. The obstacles to concerted action can be found in the way that political and economic power prevent the necessary institutional, political, and economic changes that will bring about a transition to a low carbon economy. The unprecedented crisis in Greece revealed in the toughest way the many failings of achieving sustainable development as well as the deeper political economy causes underlying these. The lab is dedicated to researching this crucial political economy dimension of sustainable development as well as promoting teaching and student involvement in these matters.
