PEC301-POLITICAL ECONOMY OF DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH

Course: Political Economy of Development and Growth

Code: PEC301

Semester: Α

Instructor: Prof. Panagiotis E. Petrakis

Scope

The aim of the course is to provide students with all the necessary theoretical and analytical background that is necessary to understand the process of development and growth as understood by economics at the beginning of the 21st century. The simultaneous evolution of economic reality and the evolution of economic thinking and growth in the last two centuries is examined in the search and identification of sources of growth and development.

Content

The lectures of the course are divided into two sections.

Section 1: Introductory Issues for Development and Growth and Critical Issues for Economic Activity

-      Includes key development issues that concern economic thinking.

-      Critical issues arise that affect the economic activity of growth, such as cultural and institutional background, complex economic systems, level of information, expectations, uncertainty and entrepreneurship.

-      The analysis here is limited to presenting these issues as synthetic elements of economic thinking.

-      Throughout the first section the emphasis is on the analysis of the concepts so that in the second part it is possible to deepen the relationship of these concepts with development and growth.

-      In fact, one can notice that these concepts originate from the adjacent economics and social sciences. But they are crucial to the evolution of growth and growth economics.

Section 2: Sources of Growth and Growth in Economic Thought

-      A theoretical review of the most important theoretical contributions is made in order to highlight the sources of growth and growth as they are formed in economic thought to date.

-      In the individual areas of economics, factors that influence the main sources of development and growth are identified and sought. These include growth theories, macroeconomics and microeconomics, finance and international finance.

-      Theoretical presentation follows the evolution of economic thinking.

-      The analysis extends to politics, psychology, history, administration, biology and anthropology which have been integrated into the economic thinking of development and growth.
